Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his recent visit to Hyderabad referred to Telangana capital as Bhagyanagar. This was the Bharatiya Janata party’s national executive meeting.
PM Modi said that it was in Bhagyanagar that Sardar Patel, the freedom fighter icon, had coined the term “Ek Bharat”. Speaking to reporters after the PM’s address, BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad said,” PM Modi said that Hyderabad is Bhagyanagar which is a sign for all of us.
The question is also arising in people's minds about whether Hyderabad was ever named Bhagyanagar? Was there a woman named Bhagyamati who had any connection with Bhagyanagar?
In many history books, the name of Hyderabad appears as Bhagyanagar, it is true but even then, there are indications of it being called Hyderabad.
A map of Hyderabad was prepared by British citizen Aron Arrow Smith in 1816. In that map, the name of Hyderabad was written in bold letters, under it he wrote Bhagyanagar and he also used Golconda.
That is, he used three names for Hyderabad on the map - Golconda, Hyderabad, and Bhagyanagar. This map has also been featured in Nanishetty Shirish's book 'Golconda, Hyderabad, and Bhagyanagar'.
Bhagyanagar is named after Bhagya Lakshmi Temple
This is being said, but historians are not accepting this argument as correct. According to these historians, there was no Bhagyalakshmi temple present near Charminar.
A senior official said on the condition of anonymity, that it would have been 30-40 years since the temple was built near Charminar. Before that, no temple was present here.
This is also confirmed by photographs of the old days. In the old photographs, there are no signs of any temple being located next to the Charminar.
There is a picture of Charminar in Hyderabad A Souvenir published in 1944 and there is no temple in it either. The Hindu temples present in Hyderabad are also discussed in this book.
But there is no mention of any temple near Charminar. This book was prepared on the occasion of the Prince of Wales coming to Hyderabad in 1922 to introduce him to the history of Hyderabad. The photo of Charminar below is taken from the 1944 printed version.
There are more arguments about this-
- Qutub Shahi was a Sia Muslim. The second name of Prophet Mohammed's son-in-law Ali was Hyder and the city was named Hyderabad after him. This is the view of most historians.
- There is also a plea that Bhagyamati had converted his name to Hyder Mahal after adopting Islam, hence the city was named Hyderabad.
- Bhagyamati was a socially enlightened niece and hence Quli Shah was later accused of her decision and changed the name of the city to Hyderabad.
- Hindus continued to call it Bhagyanagar while Muslims called it Hyderabad.
- According to some people, the city was renamed Hyderabad due to the conflict between Sia and Sunni community.
