President Donald Trump has spoken out following the conviction of Victor Martinez-Hernandez, a 24-year-old undocumented immigrant from El Salvador, in the rape and murder of Maryland mother Rachel Morin. A jury found Martinez-Hernandez guilty of first-degree murder, rape, sexual offense, and kidnapping after less than an hour of deliberation on April 14.
Police later arrested Victor Martinez-Hernandez, an undocumented migrant from El Salvador, and charged him with rape and murder. DNA evidence linked him to both the Morin case and a violent home invasion in Los Angeles. A jury found him guilty after a short deliberation in April 2025.
The case became a flashpoint in the national debate over immigration. Critics blamed federal border policies for allowing Martinez-Hernandez to remain in the country despite a violent history. The crime drew strong reactions from political leaders, including former President Donald Trump
Who was Rachel Morin?
Rachel Morin was a 37-year-old mother of five from Bel Air, Maryland. She lived a quiet life, raising her children and spending time outdoors. Friends and family described her as kind, loving, and authentic.
She often walked the Ma & Pa Heritage Trail, a popular nature path near her home. On August 5, 2023, she left for a walk around 6 p.m. and never returned. Her boyfriend reported her missing that night.
The next day, police found her body hidden in a drainage culvert near the trail. She had been raped and murdered.
Authorities later identified Victor Martinez-Hernandez as the suspect. He had entered the U.S. illegally from El Salvador, where he was also wanted for murder. DNA linked him to the Morin case and a separate assault in Los Angeles.
Why her murder sparked outrage?
Rachel Morin's murder gained national attention for several reasons.
First, the brutality of the crime shocked the local community. The victim was attacked in broad daylight on a family-friendly trail. Her death sparked fear among residents.
Second, the suspect’s immigration status fueled political debate. Martinez-Hernandez had crossed the U.S. border multiple times. He was previously deported but re-entered the country. Critics blamed weak border policies for allowing him to stay.
President Donald Trump responded on social media after the guilty verdict. He called the suspect a “monster” and blamed President Joe Biden for letting him in. He promised to deport violent criminals and tighten immigration laws.
Morin’s family also spoke out. Her mother called the crime “devastating” and criticized federal immigration failures. At the Republican National Convention, Morin’s relatives said they never heard from Biden or Harris but received a call from Trump.
Law enforcement called the killer “evil” and said the crime could have been prevented. The sheriff said the immigration system had failed, allowing a repeat offender to live undetected in the U.S.
The case became a symbol for critics of current immigration enforcement. It raised questions about border control, public safety, and government accountability.
