A recent claim circulating on social media alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Kerala had resorted to sharing beef recipes on its official Twitter handle to secure votes for the 2024 elections. This claim originated from The Savala Vada newspaper's Instagram page on April 26, sparking widespread attention on various social media platforms. However, a subsequent fact check conducted by Ground Report revealed that the claim was satirical and lacked factual basis.
Claim
The claim circulating on The Savala Vada's Instagram page suggested that the BJP in Kerala had taken drastic measures to sway voters by promoting beef consumption.
The post featured a fabricated screenshot of the BJP's Twitter account showcasing a recipe for "Kerala BJP Ularthiyathu Beef." It insinuated that the BJP endorsed beef consumption despite its historical stance against it, alleging connections to electoral funding from beef exporters and support for Hindutva groups involved in anti-beef violence.
This claim gained traction after being shared by multiple users, including one identified as RajBhaduriAviator, who posted the screenshot on Twitter with the caption, "Wah kya scene hai Vote ke liye mummy ko yummy bana dala.
Reality
Investigations conducted by Ground Report confirmed that the claim was entirely satirical and lacked credibility. The BJP in Kerala has not advocated for beef consumption as a means to win votes.
Contrary to the claim, historical evidence suggests that the BJP has adopted various approaches to the issue of beef, with some candidates promising to ensure access to clean slaughterhouses and beef within legal limits. For example, in April 2017, N Sreeprakash, a BJP candidate for the Mallapuram by-poll, expressed intentions to ensure clean slaughterhouses and legal access to beef within the limits of the law.
Fact Check
The fact check conducted by Ground Report debunked the satirical claim circulating on social media platforms. It emphasized the importance of distinguishing between satire and factual information, especially in the context of political discourse.
While the satirical post may have prompted discussions about the intersection of politics and dietary preferences in Kerala, voters needed to base their decisions on accurate information and genuine policy proposals as they prepared for the upcoming elections.
The fact check concluded that the claim regarding the Kerala BJP sharing beef recipes to win votes was false.
