The wanted gangster of the Kanpur encounter, Vikas Dubey was killed in an encounter on Friday morning. He was arrested form the Mahakal temple in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh on Thursday morning when a flower seller identified him and informed the police. He was being taken back to Kanpur after being handed over to Uttar Pradesh police. While travelling from MP to UP, the Special Task Force (STF) car in which Dubey was being taken met with an accident.
As the car overturned, he tried to flee by snatching a gun from the police personnel. The STF tried to get him to surrender himself, but he did not do so.
A subsequent cross fire injured four policemen and Dubey as well. According to the police statement, he succumbed to the injuries during the treatment at the hospital.

Background of Gangster Vikas Dubey
Dubey was accused in about 60 murder cases including that of BJP leader Santosh Shukla in 2001. He carried a reward of Rs. 5 lakh on his head. On the night of 2nd and 3rd July, a police team of 20 personnel had gone to arrest Dubey in an attempt to murder case. A resident of Bikru village near Kanpur, Rahul Tiwari had filed a complaint against Dubey of abducting him and trying to kill him. However, Dubey was already aware of the police raid.
What happened on July 3, 2020?
When police reached there, the car was stopped as a massive obstacle was blocking the road. When a few policemen got out for clearing the road, they were rained with bullets from rooftop by Dubey and his henchmen. As a result, eight policemen were killed and several injured. Since then Dubey was on a run and the STF behind him.

Police's reaction left many of his aides killed
In the hunt for Dubey, police had killed five of his aides in encounters and many were arrested in the one week span. Last, Dubey was spotted in Faridabad, trying to rent a hotel when he was captured in CCTV footage on Wednesday. Though he again slipped from police and was arrested in Ujjain as he came to visit the Mahakal temple around 7:30 am. When he was arrested, he shouted “Mai VikasDubeyhoon, Kanpur wala.”
Before arresting Dubey, police had killed his aides, Prabhat Mishra, BahuaDubey and Amar Dubey in separate encounters in Kanpur, Etawah and Hamirpur district respectively. BahuaDubey carried a reward of Rs. 50,000. Another of his aides, ShyamuBajpai was also arrested by police on Wednesday. Shyamu also carried a reward of Rs. 25,000.
Opposition questions Vikas Dubey's filmy encounter
VikasDubey was not only a gangster with political connections, but also had fought Zila Panchayat election from Shivrajpur seat in 2000. After his death, Congress and Samajwadi Party have raised questions on the encounter. Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi said that criminal was finished, but what about the crime and supporters of crime? Samajwadi Party leader AkhileshYadav said, “Darasal ye car nahipalti, raj khulne se sarkarpalatne se bachgayihai,” without naming anyone. The media convoy following the car, in which Dubey was taken, was stopped a few kilometres before for unknown reasons.
