The main accused in the Kanpur encounter, Vikas Dubey, has been arrested at temple in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh. The encounter took place last week when a police team went to arrest Dubey in his village near Kanpur. Eight policemen were killed in the encounter, including two senior officials.
He confessed by saying “Main Kanpur wala Vikas Dubey hoon,” after the arrest.
Earlier this day, Bahua Dubey and Prabhat Mishra alias Kartikeya were also killed in separate encounters by Special Task Force (STF) in Etawah and Kanpur respectively. Both of them were his close aides. Another of his close aide, Amar Dubey was killed in an encounter in Hamirpur district on Wednesday by STF. BahuaDubey was carrying a reward of Rs. 50,000 on his head.Prabhat Mishra was arrested from Faridabad and was taken to Kanpur on remand. Along with him two more people were arrested namely Ankur and Shravan when Kumar tried to flee by snatching the gun of a police personnel.
The police had arrested 8 of his aides earlier, including Shyamu Bajapai, who carried a reward of Rs. 25,000. Two policemen were also arrested. Vikas Dubey himself carried a reward of Rs. 5 lakhs, doubled from Rs. 2.5 lakhs by Additional Chief Secretary on Wednesday.
Vikas was spotted in Faridabad on Wednesday, but slipped from police. He was involved in about 60 murder cases. In the year 2000, he also fought and won the Shivrajpur seat in ZilaPanchayat election from prison.
He was the prime accused in murder of BJP leader SantoshShukla who was killed in Shivli police station in 2001. He was accused of planning various crimes from within the prison in past three decades. Last week, police had gone to arrest him in an attempt to murder case when he and his henchmen open fired on the police team. All the arrests took place in joint operations of Uttar Pradesh Policw’s STF and local police teams.
