In January this year, waterfalls in the famous Taihang Mountain Range in north China's Shanxi and Hebei provinces froze into stunning ice formations. In Niangziguan Town of Pingding County, Shanxi, one waterfall turned into a frozen cascade due to the cold weather.
In another area, the Xingtai Grand Canyon in Hebei's Xingtai City, visitors witnessed miles of pure white ice walls, with ice forming on plants like bamboo shoots and flowers, creating a winter wonderland.
China has faced extreme weather before
This isn't the first instance of extreme weather gripping China. In December 2023, China's President Xi Jinping issued an "all-out" emergency response as a cold wave swept across the country, bringing temperatures plummeting below freezing. The situation was dire, with snowfall disrupting transportation and affecting daily life across many regions.
The recent freezing of Zhufeng Mountain, coupled with last year's cold wave, underscores the unpredictability and severity of weather patterns in the region. As China braces for more extreme weather events, authorities are urged to refine precautionary measures and improve contingency plans to safeguard communities.
As China grapples with the aftermath of the cold wave, regions like Heilongjiang, Xinjiang, Inner Mongolia, Gansu, and Qinghai are bracing for record-low temperatures, with some areas expected to experience sub-zero temperatures exceeding minus 40 degrees Celsius.
