Intense protests have erupted in Pithampur, Madhya Pradesh, over the disposal of toxic waste from the Union Carbide factory, escalating to the point where two protesters attempted self-immolation by dousing themselves with oil.
The Madhya Pradesh High Court's divisional bench, comprising Chief Justice Suresh Kumar Kait and Justice Vivek Jain, heard multiple petitions on Monday against waste incineration in Pithampur. While no new ruling was issued, the court directed the government to launch public awareness campaigns to address mounting concerns. The bench also cautioned media outlets against spreading misinformation.
Medical professionals and Indore residents have filed additional court applications, citing potential severe health risks from toxic emissions. The petitioners have also demanded responses from Dow Chemical and Union Carbide regarding the environmental implications.
Despite the local administration's outreach efforts, villagers claim their concerns remain unaddressed. Ground reporter Shishir Agarwal, who visited the affected villages, found widespread opposition to the waste disposal plans, highlighting a growing disconnect between administrative assurances and community apprehensions.
The situation underscores the tension between waste management necessities and environmental health concerns, with local residents demanding greater transparency and consideration of their safety.
