Chief Minister Dr Mohan Yadav has announced an initiative offering permanent electricity connections to Madhya Pradesh farmers for just ₹5, plus a ₹1,200 deposit. This represents significant savings compared to the current system, where farmers pay ₹7,500 annually for temporary 7-horsepower connections providing 8 hours of daily electricity.
The scheme, implemented immediately in the central region with plans for statewide expansion, aims to enhance agricultural self-reliance. However, Ground Report's investigation in Raisen district reveals concerning implementation gaps.
Farmers report receiving less than the promised 8 hours of electricity—often closer to 6 hours—with persistent low voltage issues hampering effective usage. These limitations critically impact crop timing and yields, forcing many farmers to resort to domestic connections costing upwards of ₹40,000 for reliable power.
The situation highlights a significant disconnect between policy announcements and on-ground realities. While the ₹5 connection scheme addresses financial barriers, it fails to tackle fundamental infrastructure deficiencies plaguing rural agricultural communities.
For the initiative to deliver meaningful impact, authorities must address several challenges:
- Ensuring consistent power supply meeting the promised 8-hour minimum
- Upgrading rural electrical infrastructure to maintain adequate voltage
- Accelerating implementation across all districts
- Establishing monitoring mechanisms to ensure compliance
As the programme rolls out across Madhya Pradesh, its success will ultimately depend on the government's commitment to addressing these underlying infrastructure challenges that continue to burden the state's farming communities.
