Vandana's family faced casteist slurs and abuses after Tokyo Oly defeat

Ground Report | New Delhi: Vandana's family faced casteist; Hours after India lost to Argentina in the women's hockey semi-final at the Tokyo Olympics, two upper-caste men started circling Vandana Kataria house in Haridwar Roshnabad village. Upper caste people circled around Vandana house and called out the family members saying that the team lost because it had "too many Dalit players".

Naturally humiliating the family of the talented Indian forward who became the first Indian woman to score a hat-trick at the Tokyo Olympics in her crucial Group A pool match against South Africa, Vandana's brother Shekhar told TOI, "We are upset after the loss. But the team went down fighting, we were proud of that."

“All of a sudden, right after the match, we heard a loud noise. Firecrackers were being burst outside our house. When we went out, we saw two men from our village dancing in front of our house - we know them and they are upper caste."

After the women's team's defeat to Argentina in the semi-finals on Wednesday, two men allegedly circled Vandana's house in Haridwar's Roshanabad village and burst crackers while dancing, mocking the defeat, reports the Times of India. He lashed out at the player's family, saying the team lost because it had "too many Dalit players".

An FIR is yet to be registered on the basis of the complaint at the time of filing the report. SHO of Sidcul police station LS Butola told TOI, "One person whose name had cropped up has been taken into custody." He didn't say who. "We have received a complaint and investigation is on, after which a case will be registered."
