Dalit woman body found near ashram owned by ex UP minister's son

Ground Report | New Delhi: Unnao Dalit woman; Two months after the disappearance of a 22-year-old Dalit woman in Unnao, police recovered her decomposed body near an ashram owned by the son of a former minister of state. The area Sheriff's Office Officer (SHO) has been suspended for alleged laxity in the investigation.

According to police, Rajol Singh, the son of former SP Minister Fateh Bahadur Singh, was arrested on January 24 in connection with the woman's alleged kidnapping. On January 25, the woman's mother had tried to blow herself up in front of the car of the head of the Samajwadi Party, Akhilesh Yadav, in Lucknow.

The woman's mother has alleged laxity on the part of the police, especially the local SHO Akhilesh Chandra Pandey. Additional Police Superintendent Unnao Shashi Shekhar Singh said: “On December 8, a misdemeanour complaint was filed, after which an FIR was filed on January 10 as per the rules. One person was arrested and the investigation is ongoing. According to the findings of the probe, the body was recovered. We are doing an autopsy and will take further action accordingly".

We are doing an autopsy and will take further action accordingly."

When asked about the family's allegation that the police delayed filing the case, the ASP said: “This is not completely true. First, a complaint was filed for loss because the woman was of legal age. When the investigating officer expressed doubts that the defendant could have harmed the woman, the police acted accordingly and recovered her body. So far, one person has been arrested. We are looking for his accomplices."

Speaking to the media on Thursday, the woman's mother said: “Rajol Singh killed my daughter at her ashram and buried her there. He had been to the ashram before. They showed us around the place, except for the three-story building. I called a local police officer, but he turned off his phone. If he had come, he would have found my daughter alive.”

Bhim's army chief, Chandra Shekhar, issued a video message on Thursday night demanding action against Rajol Singh and the policemen.

“Both are equally responsible for the incident. I give the prime minister two days to do justice to the deceased woman. Two days are for the administration and the third will be mine,” he said, adding that he will visit Unnao as soon as possible.
