Twitter failed to comply with new IT rules: Ravi Shankar Prasad

Ground Report | New Delhi: Union Law, Communications, Electronics and Information Technology Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad has asked many questions amidst the confrontation with Twitter. Ravi Shankar Prasad has targeted and said Twitter has failed to follow the Intermediary Guidelines issued by the Government of India on 26 May.

Ravi Shankar Prasad has written in his tweet, "Twitter has failed to follow the Intermediary Guidelines issued by the Government of India on 26 May. Twitter was given many opportunities to follow our rules but it deliberately chose the path of not obeying.

"India's cultural diversity is based on the geographical structure. In some special cases, the spark spread from social media can also take the form of fire. Especially through fake news. To stop this, we have made a new rule.

"Twitter calls itself the flag bearer of freedom of expression but is deliberately ignoring the guidelines when it comes to guidelines. Apart from this, Twitter is refusing to obey the law and order of India and is also ignoring the complaints of users. Along with this, Twitter puts a post in the category of manipulated media according to its convenience and likes and dislikes.

Ravi Shankar Prasad said, "What happened in Uttar Pradesh clearly showed the arbitrariness of Twitter in stopping fake news. Twitter seems very enthusiastic about verifying facts but its negligence in many cases including in Uttar Pradesh is disturbing.

The Law Minister said, "The companies of India, whether it is of pharma or IT sector, if they go to do business in America or any other country, then they follow the rules and regulations there. When India made a rule to give voice to the persecuted, Twitter is showing reluctance to follow it.

"The rule of law is the basis of Indian society. India gives constitutional guarantees about the freedom of expression and has reiterated the same in the G-7. No foreign company can escape from complying with the laws of India under the guise of freedom of expression.

Twitter has also issued a statement regarding the whole matter. In its statement, Twitter said, "We are keeping the IT Ministry of India informed about the progress at each stage of the process. An interim Chief Compliance Officer has been appointed. Information about this will be shared directly with the ministry. Twitter is making every effort to comply with the new guidelines."

The spokesperson said that he did not want to comment on Ravi Shankar Prasad's statement or the FIR.
