The Women’s Media Center and its significance, Explained!

The Women's Media Center (WMC) was founded in 2005 by Jane Fonda, Robin Morgan, and Gloria Steinem. It is a progressive, nonpartisan, nonprofit organization dedicated to increasing the visibility, viability, and decision-making power of women and girls in media. And, as a result, ensuring that their stories are told and voices are heard.

Training

WMC has trained over 500 diverse women leaders who represent the rich tapestry of America by race and ethnicity, geography sexual orientation, disability, and life experiences. 67 of the leaders trained in the WMC Progressive Women's Voices program are women of color.

Trained alumni of WMC appear regularly in the New York Times, Washington Post, National Public Radio, CNN, MSNBC, and Fox News. According to the 2022 organizational video of WMC, “their voices have an impact and are changing the conversation”. They want the media to look like the country it represents i.e. the USA. 

WMC Climate

Women and people of color typically suffer the most as a result of climate change. But, seldom are their needs considered before, during, or after a disaster, let alone as the climate slowly changes. And, the consequences of rising temperatures ravage neighborhoods. What is happening in communities is frequently not given attention because there are few women and indigenous people, as well as little diversity, at top levels of government worldwide.

At WMC Climate they are putting the individuals who are most impacted by climate change in the spotlight for readers and the media.
