Ground Report | New Delhi: Thailand sex Valentine's day; As Thai lovers prepare to exchange displays of affection for Valentine's Day, health authorities have urged couples to practice safe sex during the pandemic, including wearing masks.

Daily coronavirus cases in this touristy Southeast Asian country have nearly doubled from 8,000 at the start of the month, and authorities fear Valentine's Day on February 14 will exacerbate the trend.

"Covid is not a sexually transmitted disease, but it is possible to catch Covid through close breathing and exchanging saliva," the director of the Office of Reproductive Health, Bunyarit Sukrat, told AFP.

For this reason, he recommended that couples pass an antigen test before their appointment and "avoid face-to-face sexual positions and deep kisses," he said.

"If possible, wearing face masks while having sex can help reduce the risk of covid," said Bunyarit, also recommending the use of contraception if you want to avoid unwanted pregnancies.

He added that since then the situation has changed with the country's vaccination campaign, so Covid tests should be sufficient for fully vaccinated people. The other notice includes using the Covid-19 tracking app to check if the restaurant they made a reservation at is safe, the outlet reported.

Authorities have also advised those going out on Valentine's Day to wear masks and maintain social distancing at home, especially around the elderly and people with chronic illnesses, to reduce the potential spread of infection.

In Thailand, February 14 is a very popular day. It is considered an auspicious day for couples who want to get married. Long queues often stretch outside marriage registration offices, particularly in Bangkok's Bang Rak district, which means "love district" in Thai. Ranked as the fifth most important day of the year in the country, Valentine's Day is particularly popular with young Thais.
