Ground Report | New Delhi: Terrorist attacks reduced; Most of the cabinet ministers and the BJP leaders claimed that India has not seen a single major 'terrorist' attack since Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government was formed in 2014. A recent speech by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said that there has not been a single major terrorist attack in the country since Prime Minister Narendra Modi took office in 2014, and added that terrorists fear the BJP government at the Centre.

According to a reply given by former Union Minister of State for Home G Kishan Reddy in Parliament on 23 March 2021, there have been six terrorist attacks in the hinterland of India.

There were 25 killing-related incidents in Jammu and Kashmir in October 2021, the fourth-highest in any month since 2012. In October 2021, Jammu and Kashmir recorded a sharp increase in the number of civilians killed in terrorism-related incidents. Twelve civilian deaths occurred in October, the most in any month in the past two years and the fourth-highest since 2012.

The data which was released by the Ministry of Home Affairs in 2019 shows that there has been a 93 percent increase in the number of security personnel killed in terrorist incidents in Jammu and Kashmir between 2014 and 2018.

In addition, the state also witnessed a 176 percent increase in the number of terrorist incidents in these five years. The number of civilian deaths in Jammu and Kashmir has also increased by 37%, while terrorist deaths have increased by 32%.

During this period, there were a total of 1,708 terrorist incidents in the state (on average, 28 terrorist incidents every month for five years), government data shows.

The number of security personnel killed in terrorist violence has increased by 72% - from 111 in the last three years of UPA-II to 191 in the first three years of the BJP.

The latest attack took place in April 2021 in which 22 security personnel were killed. In April 2017, Maoists killed 25 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel and injured seven in the Sukma district. In March 2018, nine CRPF personnel were killed in an ambush by Naxals in Sukma.

In January 2016, there were Militant attacks on army bases in Pathankot, in which seven army personnel and six militants were killed. Pathankot Airbase is one of the largest airbases in North India and the Indian Army is considered to be the third-largest army in the world.

In September 2016, four militants attacked army positions in Uri, Kashmir, killing 17 soldiers.

As per the report released by The Defence Ministry of India in 2016-17, Defence Ministry divides internal security issues into four categories.

  • Incidents in Jammu and Kashmir
  • Incidents of rebellion in north-eastern states
  • incidents in naxal affected areas
  • militants incidents inside the country

Independent Bodies data

The South Asian Terrorism Portal (SATP), a non-governmental group that monitors terrorist activities in the South Asian region, defines a major terrorist attack as one involving the deaths of three or more people - civilian or military. The SATP data is derived from available ministry data as well as media reports.

According to SATP, there have been 547 major incidents since 2014 in which 660 security forces have been killed.

According to Ajay Sahni of the South Asia Terrorism Portal, in the year 2018, Jammu and Kashmir had the highest 451 deaths in extremism-related violence in the last decade.
