Tension with China: 60,000 troops spending 2nd freezing winter on Border

Ground Report | New Delhi: Tension with China; In an attempt to resolve the ongoing clash on the Current Line of Control (LAC) in Ladakh, India, and China are likely to hold the 14th round of corps commander-level talks on January 12. Top government sources said "the situation on the ground is uncertain and “anything can happen”.

Citing top government sources, CNN-News18 said 60,000 fully armed Indian soldiers were spending a second winter in the icy heights of eastern Ladakh. So are an equal number of PLA soldiers. A leading source said things had been stable for a while, but "China cannot be trusted with anything."

The government sources further said there was not much to be optimistic about the upcoming talks, where Indian and Chinese corps commanders will meet to discuss the stalled disengagement process in Hot Springs, Depsang, and Demchok.

The 13th Corps Commander's talks last year in October ended in a stalemate. The Indian military has said that the "constructive suggestions" he made were not to the liking of the Chinese side, which also failed to provide any "progressive" proposals. The Chinese had issued a press release calling India's demands "unreasonable". (Tension with China)

After India's actions, the situation was "close to war" as the Chinese had advanced to dislodge the Indian troops. For the first time in 45 years, there were shots fired at LAC.

Earlier in October, the 13th round of senior military commander-level talks between India and China to resolve the ongoing border dispute along the LAC in eastern Ladakh was inconclusive.

As a result of a series of military and diplomatic talks, the two sides last year completed the separation process on the northern and southern banks of Pangong Lake and the Gogra region. Each side currently has around 50,000 to 60,000 troops along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in the sensitive area.
