Supreme Court to hear plea for Mehbooba Mufti's release

The Supreme Court will hear the petition demanding the release of former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti today. Mehbooba Mufti's daughter Iltija Mufti has urged the Supreme Court to amend the petition filed against the imprisonment of her mother under the Public Safety Act (PSA). Iltija has urged the Supreme Court to allow her mother to start political activities. In July, the detention of the mufti under the PSA was extended by three months.

Mufti and many other leaders of Kashmir, including Farooq Abdullah, were placed under house arrest after repealing Article 370 of the Indian Constitution, which gave special status to the erstwhile state. Earlier, the detention of the former J-K CM was extended for three months on 5 May. Farooq and son Omar Abdullah were released from detention in March.

At the same time, Iltija had filed a petition saying that her mother is the president of a political party. So they should be allowed to discharge their responsibilities. They should be allowed to meet and interact with their people, party officials, workers and common people. She should be allowed to visit various places including his constituency so that she can sit and talk among the people. Mehbooba was taken into preventive custody on August 5, 2019. After this, in February this year, he was arrested under the PSA.

Iltija had said that she had challenged the decision of his mother to be held captive under the PSA in the Supreme Court. In it, she appealed that the Supreme Court direct the Jammu and Kashmir State Administration to give Mehbooba Mufti an opportunity to meet his family members and relatives five days a week. Apart from this, the landline phone of her house should be restored. The new petition states that the dossier issued for detention is useless, unconstitutional and baseless. Subsection 3B of Section 83 of the Public Safety Act has also been violated by misuse of the law.

Iltija said that she has tried to bring to the notice of the Supreme Court that even after the notice, the Jammu and Kashmir administration has not filed any reply. Apart from this, efforts are being made to bring the behavior of the former Chief Minister to the notice of the court.
