Many parts of the country experienced strong winds and drizzle, providing much-needed relief from the scorching heat and prevailing heat wave. Delhi, in particular, received heavy rain, dust storms and strong winds on Thursday.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) assured that there would be no heat wave conditions in the next five days. With the maximum temperature in Delhi recorded at 36.9 degrees Celsius, the Safdarjung observatory reported a wind speed of 22 km/h, while the Palam observatory recorded a stronger wind speed of 58 km/h, according to the IMD.

According to the Regional Meteorological Center, Delhi is expected to have partly cloudy skies, with the possibility of very light rain and thunderstorms in some areas. The forecast indicates that both the maximum and minimum temperatures will be around 36 and 21 degrees Celsius respectively.

The IMD is forecasting sporadic showers for the next two to three days in northwestern India, including Delhi and its surrounding districts. This weather activity is attributed to an active western disturbance over the western Himalayan region.

In recent days, Delhi has experienced scorching heat, with temperatures exceeding 45 degrees Celsius, triggering a heat wave on Monday and Tuesday.

Bihar: Heavy rains bring relief

Bihar has experienced heavy rain in the past 48 hours, temporarily alleviating the sweltering heat. The rains covered several remote areas including Patna, Sheikhpura, Nawada, Jamui and Vamiki Nagar.

Accompanied by lightning and strong gusts of 30 to 40 km/h, the weather service issued a yellow signal for the state on Friday.

In south Bihar, the rain is expected to continue until Friday, while in north-east Bihar it is expected to last until Sunday. The average high temperature in the state is forecast to range between 34 and 38 degrees Celsius through May 27.

Landslides in Himachal Pradesh

Several regions of Himachal Pradesh experienced moderate to heavy rain, accompanied by lightning and thunderstorms, triggering landslides, traffic disruptions and power outages, according to the PTI news agency.

Sirmaur witnessed the closure of eleven roads, followed by Kullu with three, Chamba with two, Shimla with two and Kangra with one. In addition, 171 transformers suffered interruptions.

Punjab and Haryana: Cooler temperatures due to rain

Punjab and Haryana both received rain on Thursday, causing temperatures to drop. Chandigarh, the shared capital of both states, also experienced a dust storm in the afternoon.

Most areas in Punjab and Haryana saw maximum temperatures ranging from 31 to 34 degrees Celsius, below the usual range. The rain persisted throughout the day, covering various parts of the two states.

Gusty winds, hail storm wreak havoc in Kashmir

On Thursday, gusty winds accompanied by rain caused damage to a residential house and a vehicle in Srinagar. In addition, several trees were uprooted and crops in various areas of Kashmir were damaged by hailstorms.

Gusty winds also knocked out power in some parts of the Valley. However, officials did not report any major faults and stated that power restoration efforts were underway.

Witnesses noted that the rains continued throughout the afternoon, further lowering temperatures in Jammu and Kashmir. Moderate rain disrupted normal life while gusty winds affected areas of Srinagar and other districts, causing damage to vehicles and property.

In the Pinglish area of Tral, a walnut tree fell on a residential house owned by Muhammad Iqbal Sheikh, causing damage. Fortunately, the family was unharmed, but the house was significantly affected.

Reports indicated that hailstorms and gusty winds caused extensive damage to crops and property in multiple areas. In the Burdoo area of Pahalgam, a walnut tree fell on a vehicle, causing its damage.

The Meteorology Department is forecasting intermittent light to moderate rain and thunderstorms across most of Kashmir. The weather is expected to remain the same tomorrow, with partly cloudy to mostly cloudy conditions on May 27. Showers and thunderstorms are anticipated in scattered locations May 28-30.

Other Regions: Heavy rains expected

Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram and Tripura are expected to experience heavy rain in isolated areas on Friday, according to IMD. IMD also mentioned that isolated light to moderate showers with thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds are likely over Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha and Chhattisgarh on May 26-28, and then on May 30-31. of May.

A combination of strong winds and rain improved air quality. An average air quality index (AQI) of 98 was recorded at 9 a.m. on Friday. The AQI was 106 (moderate) at 4:00 p.m. from Thursday. The AQI is likely to return to the "moderate" category later on Friday.
