• 1978: Birth and family structure

He was born on 23 August 1978, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Joe and Pamela Bryant. He was the youngest of three siblings and the only son of his parents.

• 1970s and 1980s: An NBA lineage

Bryant's path to NBA stardom was essentially his birthright. His father, who "Jellybean" Bryant, played for various teams in the league beginning in 1975 and then he moved abroad to play in Italy with 6-year-old Bryant for several years. Kobe Bryant middle name, Bean, is a derivative of his father's surname.

• 1980s: Basketball beginnings

While overseas, the sport became his refuge from the pressure of his father's continued to advance during his career. On April 29, 1996, Bryant announced that he would drop out of college and go directly to the NBA to pursue his goal of becoming the best basketball player ever. This was a rare move as Bryant was only the sixth player to make the leap from high school to the big leagues.

• 1996: Briefly a Charlotte Hornet

Bryant was drafted as the 13th pick by the Charlotte Hornets at the age of 17. However, he was traded a week later with the Hornets picking up Vlade Divak, in an earlier deal with the Los Angeles Lakers. As a result, Bryant's dream of wearing a Lakers uniform came true, and he remained with the team for the entire duration of his career.

• 1997: Youngest Slam Dunk Champ

During Bryant's rookie year in 1997, he made history as the youngest ever slam dunk champion. An 18-year-old Bryant put on a show with incredible style, rhythm, attitude and confidence to wow the judges against other contestants, including Ray Allen, Chris Carr and Michael Finlay.

• 1999: Bryant meets his future wife

His focus and first love were to improve his game in the league and achieve stardom there. However, that didn't stop him from making a small foray into rap music. Bryant was on a video set in 1999 when he met Vanessa Laine, an extra and high school student who would become his wife two years later. Her decision to get married at a young age caused a temporary rift between her and her family.

Bryant's determination to be talked about in the same breath as Michael Jordan and Magic Johnson began to come true when he led the Lakers to three straight NBA titles from 2000-2to 002. It was an effort that laid the establishment for his place in basketball history.

• 2003: Becomes a father

Bryant and his wife Vanessa welcomed their first child, a daughter named Natalia, on January 19, 2003. She is a certified #GirlDad with four daughters, later adding Gianna ("Gigi"), Bianca and Capri to the family in 2006. 2016, and 2019, respectively. Natalia became a high pooled volleyball player while Gianna looked after her father and played basketball.

• 2003: Partnership with Nike

Brand endorsements and top athletes go together like peanut butter and jelly. And Bryant's face and name are certainly recognisable and bankable. His lucrative professional partnership with Nike began in 2003, and he has released over a dozen signature shoes with the company. Kobe Bryant's property and Vanessa Bryant made headlines in April 2021 and decided not to rebuild the contract.

• 2006: A historic 81-point game

On January 22, 2006, Bryant led the Lakers to a 122–104 win over the Toronto Raptors. Bryant dominated the court that night and scored 81 points in the game. At the time, it was the second highest-scoring game in NBA history.

• 2013: Bryant tears Achilles tendon

Basketball player won more than basketball championships. He also took home the Oscar for Best Animated Short Film in 2018. "Dear Basketball" is a five-minute film in which Bryant describes his retirement manifesto.

• 2019: Bryant releases YA fantasy book

Bryant took his writing talent and basketball knowledge players a young adult fantasy series. The first book, "The Wizardry Series: Training Camp," follows an urban basketball team and their magical coach.

• 2020: Death at 41

Kobe Bryant was killed in a helicopter crash on January 26, 2020, in Calabasas, Calif. The legendary basketball player died along with his 13-year-old daughter Gianna and seven others, including Pilot. The group was travelling to a basketball game at the Mamba Sports Academy.
