Stones pelted on Dalit groom in police presence in Jaipur

Ground Report | New Delhi: Stones pelted on Dalit groom; Ten people have been arrested by the police for pelting stones at a procession of a Dalit man in Rajasthan's Jaipur. The incident happened late on Thursday night. The stone-pelting took place when the Dalit groom riding a mare reached the bride's house in Kirori village with a procession.

The bride's side alleges that at the time when people pelted stones, policemen were deployed for security, but despite their deployment, people pelted stones on the procession.

The bride's father Haripal Balai said, "It is not common in our village for a Dalit groom to take a procession on a mare. I wanted to break this tradition of discrimination. Both my daughter and son got married. This is happening this month. People of the Rajput community in our village often say that they will not allow us to ride a horse. Because of this I already suspected that something might be wrong, so I asked the police administration In this regard, the application was also made before the district administration. Balai says that the police officials had assured him that there would be no untoward incident. Referring to the incident of Thursday night, Balai says that 'Yesterday when my son-in-law reached the gate of our house riding on a mare, stones were pelted despite the presence of policemen. Stones fell on about 10-15 people of the family. My nephew is so hurt that he had to get stitches.

Balai alleges that the stone-pelters belonged to the Rajput community and they live in their neighbourhood. Balai alleges that stones were thrown at his son-in-law and the procession because he could not see the Dalits riding a horse.

Police say that they have arrested 10 people in this case. All of them are from the Rajput community. Police said that 75 policemen were deployed on the spot that day. The attack lasted only a few seconds and after that, the attackers fled into the bushes. Three people have been injured in this stone-pelting.

The Indian Express quoted Kotputli Circle Officer Dinesh Kumar Yadav as saying that a case has been registered in this case under sections 323, 341 of IPC. Along with this, a case has also been registered under the SC / ST Act.

“The Bhim Army will be visiting the family on November 28 to be a part of the wedding and in their support. Recently there have been many incidents in which many Dalit marriages have been attacked for riding a horse due to the feudal mindset of caste discrimination. We will protest if strict action is not taken against the accused,” warned Azad Samaj Party Rajasthan president and former Bhim Army state president Anil Dhenwal.
