Ahead of Independence Day, two policemen killed, in Srinagar militant attack

Srinagar, Aug 14: Ahead of August 15 celebrations and amid heightened security, militants fired upon a Deployment Party at Gulshan Chowk Nowgam area of Srinagar city on Friday morning. Three cops sustained injuries among which two succumbed to their injuries.

After the attack, police, CRPF and Army men rushed to the area and laid siege around the area to conduct a search operation to nab the attackers. The security forces always remain deployed at the Nowgam Bypass and the security has been further tightened ahead of Independence Day.

There have been at least four encounters between militants and security forces in Srinagar this year in which eight militants have been killed. Besides, on May 20, militants killed two BSF men in Pandach area in the outskirts of Srinagar and snatched their weapons.

IGP Kashmir, Vijay Kumar, has said that the Nowgam attack was carried out by Jaish-e-Muhammad outfit. “The militants have been identified and they will be neutralized soon,” he said

Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kashmir had yesterday stated that foolproof security arrangements are in place to thwart militant strikes and to conduct all Independence Day functions smoothly.

Pertinently, the two cops, identified as Ishfaq Ayoub of 715 IRP 20 Battalion and Fayaz Ahmed of 307 IRP 20 Battalion. The injured cop who has sustained bullet injuries in his right hand has been identified as Selection Grade Constable Muhammad Ashraf.
