Delhi-based filmmaker Shaunak Sen documentary All That Breathes won the L’OEil D’Or or ‘Golden Eye’, the top documentary award at the Cannes Film Festival. All That Breathes had won the ‘World Cinema Grand Jury Prize: Documentary at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival.
All That Breathes follows the lives of brothers Mohammad Saud and Nadeem Shehzad who, working out of their abandoned basement in Delhi’s Wazirabad, rescue and treat injured birds, especially black kites. It recently had its Cannes premiere in the special screening segment.

The 90-minute feature film was chosen as the winner by the jury, made up of Polish filmmaker Agnieszka Holland, Ukrainian screenwriter and director Iryna Tsilyk, French actor Pierre Deladonchamps, and journalist Alex Vicente and Moroccan screenwriter and filmmaker Hicham Falah.
“L’Oeil d’Or goes to a film that, in a world of destruction, reminds us that every life matters, and every little action matters. You can grab your camera, you can save a bird, you can hunt for a few moments of stealing beauty It matters. It is an inspiring journey in observing three Don Quixotes who may not save the whole world, but they do save their world,” the jury said in a note shared on the L’Oeil d’Or website. The award includes a cash prize of €5,000 (approximately ₹4.16 lakh).
