SC orders to make guidelines regarding compensation on COVID deaths

Ground Report | New Delhi: SC orders to make guidelines; The Supreme Court on Wednesday ordered the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) to frame guidelines for payment of compensation to the next of kin of people who died due to COVID-19. 

The court has given 6 weeks to prepare these guidelines. However, the Court has left it to the discretion of the NDMA to decide the amount to be provided as compensation.

A three-judge bench headed by Justice Ashok Bhushan directed that the NDMA should fix the compensation amount in the next six weeks and put in place a system through which the compensation can be paid.

After hearing the petition of advocate Gaurav Bansal and Ripak Kansal, the Supreme Court gave this order. Both these lawyers had made this appeal before the Supreme Court to direct the Central Government to give compensation of Rs 4 lakh to the families of those killed due to Covid-19.

Earlier, the Modi government had filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court, saying that due to financial constraints and many other reasons, it cannot provide assistance of Rs 4 lakh to the families of those who lost their lives due to covid-19. (SC orders to make guidelines)

It was also said in the affidavit that the government has implemented a number of beneficial schemes to deal with the Covid epidemic and for the families affected by it. The government had also said that many welfare schemes have been started to deal with the epidemic, which has also benefited the people.

This affidavit has been filed in response to the petitions made by the victims' families regarding the assistance amount. In the affidavit filed before the Supreme Court, the central government also said that the central and all state governments have done a lot for the needy persons to deal with the corona epidemic and a lot has been spent in it, due to which the economic condition is not good.
