Why Russia attacks Ukraine

Ground Report | New Delhi: Russia war on Ukraine; The president of Russia, Vladimir Putin, has ordered a military operation in eastern Ukraine at dawn this Thursday, during an appearance he made from Moscow while the UN Security Council was meeting urgently to try to stop the imminent threat of a Russian invasion.

The Kremlin leader has stated that the operation, which involves the invasion of Ukraine, is intended to protect the population and that the current situation requires strong action by Russia. "We have no plans to occupy Ukrainian territory," said Putin, who has also asked the Ukrainian military to " lay down their arms and go home ." "The responsibility for any bloodshed will lie with the Ukrainian regime," the president stressed.

With a threatening tone, Putin has also announced that his reaction will be immediate if anyone tries to confront Russia, which has deployed 200,000 soldiers on Ukraine's borders.

Attacks in various cities

Shortly after those words, explosions and shots have begun to be heard in Kyiv, Kharkiv, Mariupol, Odesa and Kramatorsk, according to international media. During an intervention by the CNN correspondent live from Kyiv, these explosions have been heard, to which the journalist has responded by immediately putting on his bulletproof vest and a helmet. In fact, the mayor of the capital, who has woken up to the sound of anti-aircraft sirens, has begged citizens not to leave their homes.

In reaction to the attack, the president of Ukraine, Volodimir Zelenski, has tried to encourage the hope of the citizens, has affirmed that they are going to fight the offensive and has announced martial law for the whole territory, regretting that the attacks of the Russian troops have destroyed infrastructure and border posts.

The Kremlin's final offensive comes after weeks of diplomatic fighting, in which US Intelligence warned of the invasion decided by Putin, who rejects the possibility that Ukraine could one day join NATO. Since last Monday, the Russian president has recognized the independence of the separatist republics of Donetsk and Lugansk , expressed his desire that these territories be expanded by areas still controlled by Ukraine and received permission from the upper house of the Ukrainian Parliament to send Russian troops abroad.
