'RRR' can bring Oscar glory to India: Anurag Kashyap

Anurag Kashyap On RRR Oscars Potential

While talking to film critic Baradwaj Rangan, filmmaker Anurag Kashyap made some very critical remarks about the state of bollywood films. Bollywood’s biggest production house YashRaj Films has delivered four flops in a row with Shamshera, starring Ranbir Kapoor, being the latest. Films from Bollywood are failing miserably at the box office, but South Indian cinema is delivering blockbusters one after another. One of such films is RRR. 

South Indian director SS Rajamouli’s latest film RRR took the entire Indian film industry by a storm. The film racked record-breaking numbers. Not just this, when the film was released on Netflix, the film got a life of its own. It was as if the film critics, and audience across the globe discovered fire. The film started ranking on Netflix Top 10, globally. The bigger media outlets started talking about the film, and all they had were praises.

Why RRR perceived as a Gay love story by the western audience?

Anurag Kashyap, who has been a constant presence at Cannes Film Festivals, said RRR can bring Oscar glory to India in the International Feature Film category, if it becomes an official selection from India. This category was earlier called ‘Best Foreign Language Film’. He added, his peers in various parts of the world have been gushing over the remarking storytelling in the film.

Adding gravity to Anurag Kashyap’s prediction is Variety's prediction list. The list includes NTR Jr. as one of the contenders in the Best Actor category. 

About RRR

‘RRR’ is a fictional re-telling of two real life freedom fighters– Alluri Sitarama Raju and Komaram Bheem– in India's struggle for Independence from the British. Although the two revolutionaries never met each other in real life,but, the film fictionalized their brotherhood and camaraderie. The film stars Ramcharan, and NTR Jr. in pivotal roles. While Alia Bhatt and Ajay Devgn are seen in cameos.

The film is written by Rajamouli’s father V. Vijayendra Prasad, who also wrote Baahubali.
