Research Scholars of India appreciate the efforts of frontline workers and scientists who have helped develop and bring to market vaccines for the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. In a statement Nikhil Gupta, National Representative & Coordinator of Research Scholars of India said that some political parties leaders such as Shashi Tharoor, Jairam Ramesh, Milind Deora of Indian National Congress; and Akhilesh Yadav of Samajwadi Party, have been raising questions regarding conditional approvals given towards certain indigenously developed vaccine products for emergency use by Govt.

The statement further said that after going through the profile of the companies as well as the scientists who have worked on these projects; and with full knowledge of the research efforts involved in the development of such vaccines; RSI condemns the unscientific and insensitive comments of the aforementioned parties as the allegations have not been based on science, protocol or laws, but rather on fear, uncertainty and doubt.

"RSI fully supports the effort of global and Indian researchers and companies towards developing vaccines and remedies for pandemic diseases, and especially applauds Indian companies such as Bharat Biotech and Zydus Cadila for not only making India a prominent global force in medical science, drugs, vaccines and technology, but also for providing jobs to talented Indians to design and make in India and export to many countries abroad" Statement added.

At the same time, politicization of the issue by certain individuals from certain political parties with reference to the ruling party is highly condemnable, as the research efforts of our scientists are not politically influenced. We are grateful to the painstaking and collaborative efforts taken by the DST, CSIR, ICMR and DBT, among others, towards facilitating research and research scholars in this pandemic. period, which has allowed our country to display a collective scientific spirit and has directly or indirectly encouraged and facilitated many ground breaking research works and vaccine development efforts in our country.

Fellowship delayed; research scholars dismayed

RSI said that "we are thankful to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his tireless efforts and vision in steering the nation during the trying time of COVID-19 and announcing several initiatives towards Atmanirbhar Bharat, which our startups, companies and young researchers and workforce are tirelessly spending day and night to achieve. Added "We strongly appeal towards the concerned person(s) to kindly applaud and support the efforts of Indian companies with proven credentials in the form of publications and tests instead of raising questions regarding hypothetical third parties".

The vaccine and water business made Asia’s new richest man

The researchers, scientists and research scholars at institutes like NIV Pune have spent countless hours and sleepless nights to develop vaccines for COVID-19, and have in the past also dedicated countless years of their lives to develop world-respected vaccines for diseases like malaria, chikungunya and zika, among others. Based on the publicly accessible and available information, we do not find any particular reason to doubt an Indian-made vaccine compared to a foreign-designed one.

RSI also request the concerned stakeholders to appreciate and support the Government’s efforts towards facilitating vaccine and drug development for dangerous diseases, now and in the future. We hope that better sense will prevail and that our nation’s leaders, members of parliament and members of legislative assemblies will join hands towards the promotion of indigenous vaccines and indigenous drug development and not politicize matters which have been done with legally acceptable protocols.
