Republic TV TRP fraud busted: What you need to know

Mumbai Police claimed to have busted a major fraud of manipulating TRP (Television Rating Point) data by at least three TV channels and nabbed two persons, Mumbai Commissioner of Police Param Bir Singh said here on Thursday. In such a situation, Arnab Goswami, the editor of Republic TV, has also come under action. When asked by the Mumbai Police Commissioner, 'Will Republic TV editor Arnab Goswami be arrested?' So he gave his answer in clear words.

He said, 'Any employee, be it in any post, will be called for questioning. Then further action will be taken. The owners of the two smaller channels have been arrested. No matter how high a person is, he will be called for questioning and then further action will be taken. The TRP of the channel has not increased due to any incident. Rather it has been enhanced by rigging. If anything other than these three channels comes under suspicion, then investigation will be done. All details are being shared with the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and further action is being requested.

Republic TV TRP fraud Explained

Significantly, the Mumbai Police has revealed the names of Republic India, Box Cinema and Time Marathi. Police officials said that these TV channels were working to manipulate the TRP by paying money. Mumbai Police has exposed this secret by clamping down on the agency named 'Hansa' associated with the agency BARC, which calculates the TRP.

Officials said that over 3000 parameters across the country, maintenance of around 2000 parameters in Mumbai was assigned to Hansa, an agency associated with BARC that was tampering with TRP.

TRPs were tampered with by sharing the data with any channel in the houses where these Confidential Parameters were placed. In these houses, a special channel was asked to be kept, instead of which they were given money. In this case, the police arrested two people and were produced in the court. At the same time, Mumbai Police has given a hint to take action against the director of the Republic channel and to check the accounts of the channel.

Police has registered a case under 409, 409, 420 IPC. Nearly 20 lakh rupees and 8 lakh cash have been recovered from the bank account of the arrested person. Information of three channels was found out of which two are small channels. They were compromising the data. They were working to manipulate the TRP by paying money.

Special channels were asked to turn on. There was also a deal to turn on the English channel in the homes of illiterate people. The month was fixed. Used to pay in people's homes. 20 lakh rupees were seized from an account. One man has recovered from 8 lakh cash bank locker.
