Rainfall Triggers Floods in Andhra Pradesh

Ground Report | New Delhi: Floods in Andhra Pradesh; Heavy rains have been pounding Andhra Pradesh for several days, killing at least 17 people and leaving dozens missing. Authorities on Saturday, Andhra Pradesh has been suffering from torrential rains since Thursday, which has led to massive flooding in at least five districts of the state.

The death toll rose to 17 after three more people were killed when a building collapsed on Friday night, according to police officials. Ten people were rescued from the rubble, but two are still missing.

Earlier on Friday, a passenger bus carrying 12 people has swept away in a flash flood. Search and rescue efforts for the missing passengers continued on Saturday.

Reports of casualties are being received from various districts of southern India in the last few days and Indian officials have warned that the death toll could rise despite relief operations.

National Disaster Relief Force teams have been deployed in the worst-affected and worst-affected districts. On the other hand, local authorities have also rescued hundreds of families and shifted them to safer shelters.

Kadapa district is the worst affected area in the state, where the local airport has been closed till next Thursday due to continuous rains and floods. The area's administration says dams and dams have caused further flooding, destroying hundreds of villages and leaving many residents stranded in their homes. Rainfall is not uncommon in southern India at this time of year, with rains occurring in November and December, but their intensity indicates climate change, where the current monsoon season also received above-normal rainfall.

Last week, Andhra Pradesh's neighboring state of Tamil Nadu was also hit by floods, while a landslide caused by heavy rains in the state of Kerala last month killed at least 28 people.
