Railway to levy extra fee on redeveloped station

Ground Report | New Delhi: Railway to levy extra fee; The Railway Board has decided to levy Station Development Fee (SDF) or user fee between Rs 10 and Rs 50 from passengers for availing the facilities at the stations which are issued by the Railway Board. According to a letter, or will be improved in the future. Meanwhile, similar charges will also be levied for de-boarding trains at similar stations to be developed or redeveloped.

As per the notification approved by Railway Board, Station Development Units of Zonal Railways shall inform commercial units for developed or redeveloped stations with specific dates from which SDF will be levied and this should be done 120 days in advance.

Not only by levying additional charges but platform tickets for these redeveloped stations will also become costlier by Rs 10.

The Railway Ministry had last year approved the concept of station user development fee and it was seen as an assured source of revenue for the private players developing these stations. The Ministry of Railways hopes that with the implementation of the SDF, more and more private companies or infra companies will be encouraged to come forward to bid for the redevelopment of railway stations. Whereas, in the case of public-funded projects, the additional revenue earned will go to the Railways. (Railway to levy extra fee)

The new move is definitely going to increase rail fares in the coming times. As per the model, if you are traveling between two redeveloped railway stations then you will have to pay SDF for both the stations. But if in case, you are traveling from only one station or only to a redeveloped station, then you may have to pay for only one station.

“Station Development Fee (SDF) will be charged from the passengers (boarding and alighting at such stations). The class-wise SDF for developed/redeveloped stations will be charged as follows: For deboarding passengers at such stations, the SDF will be 50 percent of the rates mentioned above. The circular states that if both boarding/disembarking at such stations, in that case, the SDF will be 1.5 times the applicable rate.
