Ground Report | New Delhi: Puja pandals, temples attacked; On Wednesday, police opened fire on a crowd of 500 people, of which at least four people are reported to have died. The crowd was furious after a video went viral in which the Quran, the holy book of Islam, was shown being placed on the knee of the Hindu deity Hanuman.

After this video went viral, a mob vandalized many parts of the country. The firing incident took place in the southern town of Hajiganj. Local police chief Milon Mahmood said the mob attacked a temple and clashed with police, killing four and injuring dozens including 15 policemen were also injured.

Temples were attacked, Hindu worshipers were beaten up in Hajiganj in Chandpur, Banshkhali in Chattogram, Shibganj in Chapai Nawabganj and Pukes in Cox's Bazar. Several Bangladeshi Hindus and Hindu groups took to Twitter to post pictures of the vandalism.
Advocate Dr. Gobind Chandra Pramanik, General Secretary, Bangladesh Jatiya Hindu Mohajote shared a video of an attack and tweeted, "The situation is terrible!! Silpara, Attack on 150 families in Cox's Bazar, widespread vandalism, looting, vandalism of Hatia. Noakhali, Demolition of idols, vandalism, molesting women, 2 people have been found dead in Chandpur in the Municipal Corporation Kalimandir.
Indian High Commission in touch with Bangladesh
According to the Dhaka Tribune, the situation went out of control and riots broke out at several Durga Puja places one after the other. At least three people have been killed and several injured in the riots, the Daily Star reported. These three deaths occurred during a clash between the police and the mob in Hajiganj area of Chandpur.

The communal tension reportedly began when a copy of the Quran was placed at a Durga Puja pandal at Nanua Dighir Par in Kamila in the early hours of Wednesday.
The Bangladesh Hindu Unity Council wrote: “We would like to say to all Muslim brothers, do not believe the rumors. We respect the Qur’an. There is no need for Qur’an in Durga Puja. This is someone conspiring to cause a riot. There will be a fair investigation. Please don’t attack any more temples & Hindus”.
MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi while addressing the media said that the Indian High Commission is in close touch with the authorities in Bangladesh. "We have seen some reports of attacks on religious congregations in Bangladesh. We see that the Bangladesh government has reacted strongly to this. We also understand that Durga Puja celebrations are continuing in Bangladesh," he said.
