As per data from the Central Electricity Authority (CEA), over half of the country’s 135 coal-fired power plants were left with an average of fewer than four days of coal stocks. It will get worst in October-November due to high demand of electricity due to festive season. India is facing a severe shortage of coal as the shortage of it could leave thermal power plants without fuel. We could face a Power outage.
Other Countries are also facing Power outage
Not only India other countries are also facing same problem. This sudden crunch is hitting the supply chains. China has to shut down it's factories and people are facing long power cuts.
In the United States, gasoline prices have hit their highest mark since 2014. They might sell off part of the country’s Strategic Oil Reserve or ban exports of crude oil. This will lead to chaos in the global energy supply.
Europeans are also paying sky-high prices for liquefied natural gas. As we have seen in India how petrol and diesel prices are skyrocketing.
Power outage: Why this is happening?
Main reason behind this is the pandemic which put the extraction of coal and gas on hold for a while. Now it will take time to come back on track.
How much is India Dependent on coal for Electricity?
According to the data obtained from power ministry of India 60.4 % power generation is dependent on fossil fuels.
