Brittney Griner has been sentenced to 9 years in Russia for possessing a vape cartridge of cannabis oil. She is a US citizen and a basketball player. Griner comes from the LGBTQ community. She is two time Olympics gold medal winner. There is anger all over America when she is convicted in Russia. President Joe Biden has also called this sentence wrong.
President Joe Biden said that “Today, American citizen Brittney Griner received a prison sentence that is one more reminder of what the world already knew: Russia is wrongfully detaining Brittney. It’s unacceptable, and I call on Russia to release her immediately.”
Why Brittney got arrested?
Griner, 31, was arrested at Moscow airport in February for possession of a vape cartridge. Her defense team says that Griner had packed the cartridges by mistake. But all our arguments were ignored by the court which contradicts legal practice. The court’s decision is discriminatory.

Many big US politicians, have appealed to take every possible step to bring back Britteny Griner.
What US Will do?
It is believed that the Biden administration will try to free Brittney by doing a prisoner swap. Russian Arms dealer Viktor Bout may be released by the US on condition of Griner’s release.
Along with Griner if US get Paul Whelan freed too a former U.S. Marine who was arrested on espionage charges in 2018, it will be a good deal.
Victor Bout was arrested in Thailand in 2008, he is Russian Arms dealer Nicknamed as merchant of Death. He was extradited to the U.S. in 2010, then convicted and sentenced in 2011 for 25 years in prison.
The relations between the US and Russia have deteriorated greatly due to the Ukraine war. This situation, possibly influenced the Brittney case verdict. Now Russia can take advantage of this situation. Russia can use this as bargaining chip.
