‘Parasite’ rules Oscar 2020, director Bong Joon Ho makes Asia proud

GR News Desk, New Delhi |South Korean film, Parasite swept the 92nd Academy Award, winning four Oscars in a night at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. The film, a dark social satire, made history with Bong Joon Ho becoming the first Asian and South Korean filmmaker to bag the best director Oscar along with winning the best international feature film, best original screenplay, and best sound editing. 

"I never thought I would win," Bong said while accepting his best director Oscar. Paying tribute to his four fellow director nominees he said, "I would like to get a Texas chainsaw and split the Oscar into five and share it all with you." 

Meanwhile, war film 1917 won three Oscars for its stunning "one-shot" feel cinematography, for visual effects and for sound editing. 

Joaquin Phoenix won his first Oscar, for best actor, for playing a failing clown who finds fame in violence in the dark comic-book tale "Joker," and gave an impassioned speech about climate change and animal rights. The performance has been widely appreciated and already swept several global awards. 

Renee Zellweger won the best actress Oscar for her performance as an aging Judy Garland in the musical biopic "Judy."

"Once Upon a Time" brought the first acting Oscar for Brad Pitt, who played a supporting role as a stuntman in the Quintin Tarantino film, a love letter to Hollywood. "I'm a bit gobsmacked to tell you the truth," said Pitt, who recalled his early days starting out as an unknown actor. "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood - ain't that the truth?," he said, dedicating the Academy Award to his six children with former wife Angelina Jolie.

Laura Dern took home the Oscar for best-supporting actress for her role as a ruthless divorce lawyer in "Marriage Story." "This is the best birthday present ever," said Dern, who will turn 53 on Monday. 

Netflix's original "The Irishman" directed by Martin Scorsese that had 10 Oscar nominations, failed to impress the jury and came away empty-handed.
