Karnataka-based environmentalist Tulsi Gowda awarded Padma Shri for planting over 30,000 trees and being involved in environmental protection activities for the past six decades.

When she reached Rashtrapati Bhavan to recieve her award she was bare foot, wore a traditional dhoti. He simplicity won many hearts. when she was confronted by PM Modi and Amit Shah, both the veteran leaders honored her achievement and saluted her. Photographer clicked this picture which is now viral in social media.

Journey of Tulsi Gowda

  • Tulsi Gowda was born in a poor tribal family and lost her father when she was only two. She had to work as a daily wage labourer along with her mother to support the family and hence received no formal education.
  • She was married off at an early age, but her husband passed away when she was quite young.
  • Tulasi Gowda started her journey in the 60s by making this world a better place to live by planting one sapling after another. 
  • Gowda worked for Karnataka Forestry Department.
  • She continued working at the nursery alongside her mother as a daily wage worker for 35 years.
  • She then worked at the nursery with her permanent position and finally retire at 70 years old.
  • From her traditional knowledge she worked in the direction of stopping afforestation.
  • Tulsi Gowda is 72 years old today. Every year she plants and nurtures thousands of trees.
  • Tulsi also Known as the ‘Encyclopedia of Forest’ because of her vast knowledge of diverse species of plants and herbs.
  • On 26th January 2020, the Government of India conferred Tulasi Gowda with the prestigious Padma Shri award.
