Over 100 stray dogs poisoned

Some villagers who had been suspicious of the disappearance of street dogs in the village had informed the Animal Protection Club in Shimoga. Club members who arrived at the venue on Tuesday evening, with the help of police and veterinarians, uncovered the dogs' carcasses.

Bhadravathi village police have lodged a complaint with the village panchayat officials on Wednesday. He suspected some of the dogs were buried alive.

Shivamogga Police Superintendent of Police Lakshmi Prasad said that the village panchayat officials killed the dogs and buried them. He also confirmed that a complaint has been lodged against the panchayat authorities.

Sp further said, "The complaint states that the order to kill the dogs was given by the gram panchayat." “We have sought a report on the matter from a team of veterinarians on the cause of death and other details. Further action will be taken based on the report."

Earlier 150 monkeys were killed

The gram panchayat was allegedly tasked with rearing the stray dogs, for which it hired a contractor. Police claimed that the contractor could have aided in the murders and the subsequent disposal of bodies.

"It seems that the contractor killed around 30 to 40 dogs and buried them there," Prasad said. "Some Gram Panchayat members may also attend."

Earlier in Hassan district, 150 monkeys were killed and their carcasses were released. According to a report in Times of India, the brutality caught the attention of the Karnataka High Court, urging strict action against the culprits.
