Ground Report | New Delhi: Every year around 7 lakh people commit suicide in the world, in 2019 the figure was 7.03 lakh. Which means one person commits suicide every 40 seconds. One out of every 100 people in the world lost their lives due to suicide. According to the World Health Organization, suicide accounts for about 1.3 percent of all deaths in the world. Making it the 17th leading cause of death.

The information has come out in the report Suicide Worldwide in 2019 released by the World Health Organization (WHO) on 16 June 2021. The number of people who have died due to suicide in the world is not even in cases of malaria, HIV/AIDS, murder.

Most live lost in low and middle-income countries

Cases of suicide are reported all over the world, most of the lives were lost in low and middle-income countries. In 2019, 77 percent of the total deaths in suicides went to these countries. Most of the world's population lives in these countries. If we look at the global level, the death toll due to suicide was 9 per lakh.

It was 11.2 in Africa, 10.5 per lakh in Europe, and 10.2 in Southeast Asia. The lowest was recorded at 6.4 per lakh in the Eastern Mediterranean region.

On the other hand, if we talk about suicides and deaths by women only, then globally this figure was 5.4 per lakh. Whereas in Southeast Asia it was 8.1 per lakh. In men, the global death toll due to suicide was 12.6 per lakh. It was 18 per lakh in Africa, which was much higher than the global average. Similarly, it was recorded at 14.2 per lakh in America and 17.1 per lakh in Europe. (One person commits suicide every 40 seconds).

About 58 percent of those who lost their lives due to suicide were below 50 years of age. Similarly, about 88 percent of teens who died in suicide lived in low- and middle-income countries.

If we look at the cause of death among young people (15 to 29 years), suicide was the fourth leading cause of death. Similarly, it was also the fourth leading cause of death for adolescents (15 to 19 years).

173,347 people lost their lives in India (one person commits suicide every 40 seconds)

If we look at the statistics of deaths due to suicide in India, according to WHO, 173,347 people died due to this in 2019. Of which 42 percent were women. This means 72,935 women gave their lives in suicide this year, while the death toll was 100,413.

Cases of suicide have not decreased, it has registered a decrease of 36 percent in the period of 20 years between 2000 and 2019. This was 17 percent in the Eastern Mediterranean region, 47 percent in the European region. 49 percent in the Western Pacific region.

It is also targeted in the UN Sustainable Development Goals under 3.4. In which by promoting mental health and wellness. There is a third reduction in deaths due to it by 2030, but if this report is to be believed, then we will not be able to achieve this goal.
