Ground Report | New Delhi: Displacement of tribals in India; The Minister of Tribal Affairs told the Lok Sabha that according to information provided by the Ministry of Coal (MoC), there is no information available on the number of families facing the threat of displacement as a result of the business licenses granted for mining the coal.

The Ministry of Coal (MOC) has further reported that from 2015 to date, the Ministry of Coal has allocated a total of 29 coal mines for commercial sale of coal in Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, and Odisha. The minister said that the acquisition of land, rehabilitation is carried out by state governments.

The Scheduled Tribes and Other Traditional Forest Dwellers (Recognition of Forest Rights) Act, 2006, in section 4 (5) states that save as otherwise provided, no member of a forest-dwelling Scheduled Tribes or Other Traditional Forest Dweller shall be evicted or removed from the Forest Land under his occupation till the recognition and verification procedure is complete.

Over 20,000 families, mostly Adivasis/tribals, face the threat of displacement, as a result of commercial licenses given for coal mining in the States of Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, and Odisha.

lack of drinking water

No state government has sent any report to the Ministry of Jal Shakti about the acute shortage of drinking water in any city. However, the ministry has identified 1,597 blocks in 255 districts as water-scarce. Based on the available information, 756 Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) have been identified as water-scarce, out of which 84 ULBs are in Uttar Pradesh. This information was given by Jal Shakti Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat in Rajya Sabha.
