Research scholars have said that they will go on hunger nationwide hunger strike if Modi government didn’t increase the fellowship amount by 31st December or maximum by 1st January.
PhD Scholar of AIIMS , Lal Chandra Vishwakarma, chairman of Society of Young Scientists said to groundreport.in that from last few months they have been to several government offices and met many officials and ministers. They have even sent written and e-mail applications but no step has been taken yet to address the problem.
A research scholar, Vickey Nandal, Research scholars representative of students council, IIT Delhi told us that we are demanding 80% hike in fellowship amount. Last time the amount was hiked 56%. If the amount will not be increased by 1st January then we will mutually decide in the meeting scheduled on 3rd January and will protest nationwide.
Meanwhile, an alumni of IIT Madras, research fellow of Centre of Biomedical Research SGPGIM campus Lucknow and national representative and coordinator of Research Scholars of India, Nikhil Gupta, told us that representative scholars of all major institutions had met Human Resource Development Minister Prakash Javedkar and Union minister Dr. Harsh Vardhan.
Javedkar ensured that the fellowship amount of scholars across the country will increase soon but there is no written answer were handed to the scholars nor have been there any action that could be interpreted as government’s step to fulfil their promise.
PhD scholar from Biotechnology department of IIT Roorke, Niladri Das told us that research scholars of all the institutions will decide further strategy in a meeting that is scheduled to be at AIIMS on 3rd January. H e also said that if government doesn’t increase the fellowship amount by deadline date then scholars will go on hunger strike nationwide. The said meeting is also to be held in Bengaluru, Chennai and Kolkata.
Research scholars of IIT Delhi, Madras, Kharagpur and IIT Roorke and other campus IISER Kolkata, ACTREC, IISER Pune, BHU, AIIMS New Delhi have previously protested on road against government for not increasing the fellowship amount in last four years.
These are the main demands of research scholars:
1. JRF, SRF, PhD students’ fellowship amount shoulnd be increased by 80%, as amount should be increased 20% every year.
2. The fellowship amount should reach on time. Now the amount comes in three or six and sometimes in eight months.
3. Government must make guidelines under pay commission to ensure that researcher get their fellowship amount every month on time.
