The National Green Tribunal’s Central Zone Bench in Bhopal has issued directives to ensure the protection of the Nahargarh Wildlife Sanctuary in Rajasthan. The tribunal’s decision, dated March 18, 2024, comes after multiple petitions highlighted the need for stricter adherence to environmental guidelines by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change.
The order has brought to light disputes within departments and allegations of unauthorized commercial activities within the sanctuary’s boundaries. Concerns have been raised about the Forest Department’s role in allowing potentially illegal constructions, such as hotels and resorts, which may contravene environmental laws.
Senior officials, including the Additional Chief Secretary of Forest and Wildlife and the Principal Chief Conservator of Forest of Rajasthan, have been instructed to conduct thorough investigations and report on the measures taken to resolve these issues.
The tribunal has stressed the importance of following environmental notifications and regulations to prevent illegal encroachments and activities that could harm the sanctuary. It has called for immediate actions like the clear marking of the sanctuary’s boundaries with pillars and wires.
District-level forest officers and sanctuary officials have been asked to explain their inability to enforce sanctuary protection notifications. Those found responsible for allowing unauthorized constructions will face consequences under the law.
The directives aim to safeguard the eco-sensitive zone and wildlife sanctuary, with a focus on swift action and strict enforcement of protective measures. The NGT has requested a report on the actions taken within two months to track progress and ensure environmental rules are being followed.
The primary objective of these directives is to preserve the eco-sensitive zone and wildlife sanctuary, emphasizing the immediate implementation and enforcement of guidelines. The NGT has directed the submission of an action-taken report within two months to monitor progress and ensure compliance with environmental regulations.
The tribunal's proactive stance underscores the critical importance of preserving natural habitats and preventing unauthorized commercial activities that pose threats to ecological balance and wildlife conservation efforts in Nahargarh Wildlife Sanctuary.
