Pamban Bridge : Indian Railways is building country's first vertical-lift bridge connecting Rameswaram in Arabian Sea to mainland India that will allow ships and steamers to pass through without any hindrance.
Union Railway minister shared stunning pics of this under construction bridge. He said this will be operational by March 2022
New Pamban Bridge: Facts
- It will be a 2.05 km railway bridge which will connect Rameswaram to the mainland in Tamil Nadu.
- The new bridge will help the railways to operate trains at higher speed, carry more weight and increase the volume of traffic between Pamban and Rameswaram.
- Existing Bridge is 105 Year old.
- It will cost 250 crore.
- This is country's first vertical-lift bridge that will allow ships and steamers to pass through without any hindrance.
What is vertical lift Bridge?
- 63-metre stretch in this bridge will lift up while remaining parallel to the deck to allow access to the ships.
- Current bridge has the 'Scherzer' rolling lift technology in which the bridge opens up horizontally, to let ships pass through.
- Vertical lift technology in new bridge will lift part of bridge vertically upward.
- In comparison to existing manual operation and control, the new bridge will have electro-mechanical controlled systems which will be interlocked with train control systems.

Vertical lift bridges use a system of counterweights and cables to move an interior lift span section that remains horizontal as it is raised up and down like an elevator, allowing river traffic to pass beneath the structure. The Hawthorne Bridge is the most prominent example of a vertical lift bridge.
