Ground Report | New Delhi: Muslim Women pictures misused: In a disturbing display of selective abuse targeting Muslim women, photos of hundreds of them were uploaded by an unknown group to an app using GitHub - called 'Sully Deals' - on Sunday, July 4. Sully or Sully is a derogatory term used for Muslims.

The app came to the fore after people started sharing their 'deal of the day' on Twitter, but it has since been taken down by GitHub. Why is the app problematic? GitHub is essentially a hosting platform, with a repository of open-source code. App 'Sully Deals' was created and used on GitHub.

"Once opened, the app will ask the user to click on 'Find Your Sully Deal of the Day. It will then randomly display a picture of a Muslim woman as your 'Sully Deal of the Day - this photo is most likely obtained from his social media account. I was shocked to see my face right there, which was displayed as the deal of the day," pilot Hana Mohsin Khan by profession told The Quint.

Speaking to The Quint, a 27-year-old woman from Delhi-NCR said that she has quit the social media platform after her pictures surfaced on the 'Sully Deals' app.

Reaction

"I was shocked when I saw that a random handle shared a picture of me and tagged me as 'Deal of the Day' on Twitter. You can imagine why she is so scared? But I am tired and scared." Obviously, if I'm in danger and the boundaries between my real and reel life are blurry, no one is going to help me, but I am."

Khan, a popular voice on social media, said that he is not scared but angry. (Muslim Women pictures misused)

"As a woman, I'm angry. I'm not worried or intimidated because we've been through so much to get here. So many people have told me I should stop posting pictures. But why should I? Do I? But at the same time, how long will this last? When will action be taken," Khan said, adding that a group of women is exploring legal options.

GitHub's response

As a hosting platform, GitHub, among other things, allows users to create apps under personal or administrative names. You are also allowed to share or sell these apps in the GitHub Marketplace. There is no clarity on who created the 'Sully Deals app. (Muslim Women pictures misused)

GitHub's Chief Operating Officer Erica Brescia confirmed on Twitter that the app has been taken down. However, no formal statement has been issued.

Earlier in May, Liberal Doge, an India-based YouTube channel, on Thursday, May 13, streamed a live video that posted sexual abuse and misogynistic remarks on Eid Ul Fitr photos of Pakistani women. According to many social media handles, the channel is being run by a person named Ritesh Jha.
