Ground Report | New Delhi: Most Indians believe only a Hindu can be an Indian; A research report by the Pew Research Center released on Tuesday is based on conversations with 30,000 people. The study was conducted among people of 17 languages ​​in the last months of 2019 and early 2020, i.e. shortly before the start of the Covid epidemic.

The survey by the Pew Research Center has found that most Indians believe that it is very important to be a Hindu to be truly Indian.

About 64 percent of Hindus believe that religion and language are closely linked to national identity. About 80 percent of the respondents believe that speaking Hindi is very important to be truly Indian.

The report says, "Most people say that it is most important for people of all religions to be a 'true Indian' and tolerance is a religious and civic principle. Indian people are unanimous that respect for each other's religions is very important "

Similarities

When people of different religions were asked similar questions, some questions got similar answers. such as...

77 percent of Hindus and almost the same number of Muslims believe in the fruit of Karma.

33 percent of Indian Christians believe in the purifying power of Gangajal. Among Hindus this number is 81 percent.

In North India 12 percent of Hindus, 10 percent of Sikhs and 37 percent of Muslims believe in Sufism.

Most people of all religions say that it is very important to respect the elders.

Variations

Despite many similarities in common life in India, many differences between religious groups have emerged very clearly in this study. For example, most people of big religions say that their religion is different from others.

66 percent of Hindus say that their religion is completely different from Islam. 64 percent of Muslims also believe the same.

However, two-thirds of Jains and nearly 50 percent of Sikhs say they have many similarities with Hinduism.
