Misogyny at peak after Mirabai Chanu's

Ground Report | New Delhi: Misogyny at peak after Mirabai Chanu's; The 26-year-old Mirabai Chanu won a silver medal for the country on Saturday by lifting 202kg (87kg + 115kg) in the 49kg category to better Karnam Malleswari's bronze at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. The medal comes as a major achievement for Mirabai, who failed to enter a single valid lift at the Rio 2016 Olympics.

The news has since gone 'viral' on social media platforms, with thousands of congratulatory messages pouring in. Her name as well as "Congratulations India" have now become top trends on Twitter, as happy netizens wish Chanu. But at the same time, few posts are disturbing and misogynistic.

One of the Twitter user wrote, "there are girls who making reels, showing navel to strangers, posting thirst trap pictures and there are girls who representing the country, winning and making the whole country proud."

At the same time, another user wrote: "Real feminism" is when women do something that is highly male-dominated like sports, armed forces because of course femininity is weak and masculinity is the bar of good things. I'm very intelligent."

Another Twitter user Risha wrote "Waiting for an Indian man to win Olympics medal so that I can tell all men what an ideal man looks like".

Overall, this is India's second weightlifting medal at the Olympics after Karnam Malleswari, who won a bronze medal at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. With this Mirabai has become the 17th individual Olympic medalist overall from India (from 1900 to 2021).

Incredibly, Mirabai failed to register a single clean lift in the clean and jerk at the 2016 Rio Olympics. The way he has made a comeback is absolutely incredible. Thanks to Mirabai's talent, India has opened its medal account in the Tokyo Games. (Misogyny at peak after Mirabai Chanu's)

Chanu had ended India's 21-year wait for a weightlifting medal at the Olympics. He lifted a total of 202 kg (87 kg + 115 kg) to better Karnam Malleswari's bronze medal at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. With this, she banished the ghosts of the 2016 Games where she failed to log a single valid lift.

China's Hou Zhihui lifted 210 kg (94 kg + 116 kg), while Indonesia's Aisha Windi Kentika took the bronze with an effort of 194 kg (84 kg + 110 kg).

Seeing her weakness in the marquee event, Chanu attempted 84kg in her first attempt of the snatch. Manipuri took his time and played the barbell cleanly. She lifted 87kg in her next attempt and increased the weight to 89kg, a kilogram more than her personal best of 88kg at the National Championships last year. However, she was unable to better her personal best and settled for 87kg behind only leader Zhihui in the snatch event, who set a new Olympic record with an effort of 94kg.
