Lucky Ali, Nikhil Chinapa join UNDP’s ‘Open Up India’ Music Concert to support and raise funds for India’s informal sector workers

UNDP India hosted a virtual music concert on 12th March 2021 as part of its ‘Open Up India’ campaign to raise funds for the informal sector works who lost their jobs and livelihoods during the pandemic. Celebrity musician Lucky Ali and popular DJ and festival Nikhil Chinapa came together with upcoming musicians like Vasu Raina, Raghav Meattle and Zephyrtone to support UNDP for this campaign. The COVID-19 pandemic has affected nearly 450 million informal sector workers in India, which is more than 80 percent of the labour force, according to ILO. This includes rural entrepreneurs, sanitation workers, daily wage labourers and migrant workers whose livelihoods were severely hit and are still struggling to recover. UNDP has been working closely with Government and local partners to restore their lives and livelihoods since the beginning of the pandemic. Celebrity musician and actor, Lucky Ali whose song ‘O Sanam’ recently went viral again on social media, shared, “Well, first of all I have a lot of respect for UNDP for bringing about an awareness about the informal sector, because normally people working in informal sector might not really have a backup plan. They go from job to job and so efforts like this concert to raise funds to support their cause is really amazing. I would say everyone, please go and donate because every small contribution counts.”

Commenting about the concert, Shoko Noda, Resident Representative UNDP India added, “Across the world, UNDP has been working on the ground to support the people who have been severely affected by the pandemic – most of them have lost their jobs, their loved ones, their homes and are struggling to cope up with these difficult times. In India, we have reached out to more than 100,000 informal sector workers so far. Through this campaign and this music concert, we hope we will be able to raise enough funds so that we can reach out to more people who need us now, more than ever. I urge each one of you to support this campaign with your heart and your wallet”

The virtual music concert was open to all and tickets are available free of cost on Insider.in.
