Legendary actor Dilip Kumar dies at 98; End of an era

Ground Report | New Delhi: Legendary actor Dilip Kumar; Veteran film actor Dilip Kumar passed away on Wednesday at the age of 98. He was unwell for the past several days and was admitted to the hospital several times. Confirming the death of Dilip Kumar, Doctor Jalil Palkar of Hinduja Hospital said that he breathed his last at 7.30 am on Wednesday. Dr Jalil said that he died due to long-term ailments.

Information about his death was tweeted from Dilip Kumar's Twitter handle at 8 am. This tweet has been done by his family friend Faisal Farooqui.

The tweet read, "With a heavy heart and deep sorrow I announce that our favorite Dilip Saab passed away sometime back. We have come from God's side and have to return to Him. - Faisal Farooqui."

A loss to the cultural world

On the death of Dilip Kumar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has tweeted and described it as a loss to the cultural world.

He wrote in the tweet, "Dilip Kumar ji will be remembered as a cinematic legend. He was endowed with an unparalleled talent that has captivated audiences generation after generation. His passing is a loss to our cultural world. His family, Condolences to the friends and countless fans. RIP."

It was only last week that Dilip Kumar's family friend Faisal Farooqui told that he has been admitted to a private hospital in the city due to age-related medical problems.

Dilip Kumar was also admitted to the hospital on 6 June due to difficulty in breathing.

Earlier, Dilip Kumar was hospitalized on June 6 after experiencing breathlessness. He was diagnosed with bilateral pleural effusion -- a build-up of excess fluid between the layers of the pleura outside the lungs and underwent a successful pleural aspiration procedure. He was discharged after five days.

Known as the 'Tragedy King' of Bollywood, the veteran actor's career spanned over six decades. He has acted in over 65 films in his career and is known for his iconic roles in movies like 'Devdas '(1955), 'Naya Daur' (1957), 'Mughal-e-Azam' (1960), 'Ganga Jamuna' (1961), 'Kranti' (1981), and 'Karma' (1986). He was last seen in 'Qila' in 1998.
