In the Union Budget 2025-26, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced plans to expand the UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Naagrik) scheme to improve regional air connectivity in India. The scheme will connect 120 new destinations and carry 4 crore passengers over the next 10 years, providing better access to smaller airports and helipads, especially in the North East, hilly areas, and other aspirational regions.

  • Expansion: The UDAN scheme will extend its reach to more cities, adding helipads and smaller airports.
  • New Airport in Bihar: A new airport will be constructed in Bihar to improve connectivity.
  • Western Kosi Canal: The government will provide financial support for the Western Kosi Canal project.
  • New Tourist Destinations: 50 new tourist destinations will be developed in partnership with state governments.
  • Regional Air Connectivity: 120 new airports will be added to enhance regional air connectivity under the scheme.

Sitharaman said the UDAN scheme, connecting regional airports, has benefited 1.5 crore middle-class people, enabling faster, affordable travel. Since 2016, it has connected 88 airports and launched 619 routes across India, increasing access to air travel for speedier journeys.

The government is focused on improving tourism infrastructure and expanding air connectivity. Finance Minister Sitharaman announced a new initiative to develop the top 50 tourist destinations in India in partnership with state governments, who will provide land for hotels and infrastructure.

She emphasised that MUDRA loans will be available for homestays, and skill-development programs will be organised for youth in hospitality management institutes to create tourism jobs. Furthermore, performance-linked incentives will be provided to states for effective tourism management, including better amenities, cleanliness, and marketing.

To enhance travel, the government will introduce streamlined e-visa facilities and waive visa fees for certain tourist groups. These efforts aim to boost tourism and make it easier for travellers to visit India’s top destinations.

The Economic Survey 2024-25 highlighted the growth in India’s aviation market. With a surge in air traffic, Indian airlines have ordered new aircraft, and the Airports Authority of India is investing in airport upgrades. A capital expenditure plan of over ₹91,000 crore is being pursued from FY20 to FY25, and by November 2024, 91% of this target was achieved.

The government's focus on expanding the UDAN scheme and enhancing regional connectivity will improve air travel for millions of Indians, boost tourism, and meet the growing demand for air travel.
