Temperatures in Madhya Pradesh have crossed 44°C due to hot westerly winds sweeping across the state. On Monday, Narmadapuram recorded the highest temperature at 44.3°C, followed by Ratlam at 44°C. Major cities like Bhopal, Indore, Gwalior, Ujjain, and Jabalpur also experienced the hottest day of the season, with temperatures crossing 40°C. The heat is expected to persist on Tuesday.
The Meteorological Department has issued a heat wave alert for eight districts—Sheopur, Morena, Bhind, Shivpuri, Guna, Neemuch, Mandsaur, and Ratlam. It has also warned of heat wave conditions in Bhopal, Indore, Ujjain, and Gwalior on April 9 and 10. Nights will remain warm in Indore, Ujjain, and Dhar.
Senior meteorologist Dr. Divya E. Surendran said that a Western Disturbance on April 11 might bring light rain to some areas. Until then, the state will continue to face extreme heat. On Monday, Bhopal recorded 41.6°C, Indore 40.6°C, Gwalior 41.7°C, Ujjain 42°C, and Jabalpur 40.7°C. Other districts also reported high temperatures, including Guna (43°C), Sagar (42.6°C), Dhar (42.4°C), Mandla (42.2°C), Shajapur (42.1°C), and Khajuraho-Damoh (42°C).
In the first week of April, night temperatures stayed 2–3°C above normal in most areas. Hot westerly winds pushed daytime highs to 39–44°C in Indore, Sagar, and Narmadapuram. Ratlam reported a heat wave during this period.
In the second week, night temperatures in Indore, Ujjain, and Chambal are expected to range between 23–26°C. Moist winds from the east may provide slight relief in Bhopal, Jabalpur, and nearby regions. Daytime temperatures in Gwalior, Chambal, Sagar, and Shahdol may touch 41–43°C.
During the third week, stronger north-westerly winds are likely to keep minimum temperatures between 25–27°C, while maximums could reach 42–44°C. The state may face 2–3 days of heat wave along with a chance of light rain.
The fourth week will see further rise in temperatures. Night temperatures are expected to stay 3–4°C above normal at 27–30°C. Both day and night will remain hot. Gwalior, Chambal, and Rewa may record highs between 43–45°C, while other cities will hover around 41–44°C. A cyclonic system could extend the heat wave towards the end of the month.
April and May are the peak months for heat waves in the state. The Meteorological Department has forecast 15–20 heat wave days and 30–35 days of hot winds until May. While summer usually intensifies by late March, this year saw a brief drop in temperature due to Western Disturbance and cyclonic circulation.
