A severe cold spell will hit Madhya Pradesh from January 25 as cold northern winds will cause a 2 to 3 degree Celsius drop in day and night temperatures. Current weather patterns, influenced by two active systems, are temporarily bringing warmer southeasterly winds, but this is expected to change.
Weather systems affecting MP
Senior meteorologist Dr. Ved Prakash Singh explained that cyclonic circulation is active over Punjab and nearby areas, along with a western disturbance. This has led to southeasterly winds in Madhya Pradesh. However, in the next two days, the wind direction will shift to the north, bringing colder conditions across the state.
Most cities in Madhya Pradesh are experiencing bright sunshine, leading to warmer day temperatures. Jet stream winds are active in North and West India but have minimal effect in MP. These winds, flowing at a height of 12.6 km, were recorded at 268 km/h on Wednesday. The slower speed of the jet stream winds has contributed to the recent rise in temperatures across the state.
In the past five days, cities with temperatures below 20 degrees Celsius and cold wave conditions are now experiencing warmer days with no significant cold wave effect. Night temperatures have also increased in several places.
-
January 23: Light fog expected in Gwalior-Chambal division.
-
January 24: Clear skies and bright sunshine statewide. Day temperatures will rise slightly, but night temperatures will drop again.
Temperature variations across MP
The state is experiencing two contrasting weather patterns: warm days and cold nights. On Wednesday, day temperatures rose by 5 degrees Celsius in many cities, with several places above 28 degrees Celsius. The highest temperature of 31.2 degrees Celsius was in Mandla, while Pachmarhi recorded the lowest temperature at 7.6 degrees Celsius.
