Madhya Pradesh’s weather has shifted due to a western disturbance and cyclonic circulation. The change has led to warmer nights, with temperatures rising by 4 to 5 degrees, cooler days, and reduced cold wave intensity. These patterns are expected until December 28.
Dense fog covered nearly half of Madhya Pradesh this morning, including Bhopal and Indore. The foggy and cool weather has intensified the winter chill. A rain alert has been issued for 10 districts in the Malwa-Nimar region, including Indore-Ujjain.
Starting December 27, the state will experience widespread hailstorms, rain, and strong winds. Wind speeds in over half the districts are predicted to reach 40 to 50 km/h. An orange alert has been issued for 11 districts.
Cloudy skies prevailed across the state on Wednesday, adding to the cold in Bhopal, Indore, Ujjain, Gwalior, and Jabalpur. Night temperatures in some regions spiked, rising 7 degrees above normal. Bhopal’s daytime temperature was 22.5°C, Indore’s was 24.3°C during the day and 16.9°C at night, and Jabalpur recorded the highest daytime temperature of 27.4°C.
Senior meteorologist Dr. Divya E. Surendran explained the ongoing weather changes, stating, “A Western disturbance is active, and a low-pressure area in the Bay of Bengal is influencing the weather. Another Western disturbance is expected on the night of December 26, leading to a strong weather system across the state until December 28.”
December rainfall has become common in Madhya Pradesh over the last decade. This year, several districts, including Chhindwara, experienced sporadic showers earlier this week. Similar conditions are likely to continue for the next few days. Following this wet spell, severe cold is expected to return in January.
Madhya Pradesh’s air quality has changed. Maihar is the cleanest city in the state, with an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 109, among the cleanest in the country. Other cities reported AQI levels of 112 in Khajuraho, 156 in Burhanpur, 176 in Jabalpur, and 274 in Indore.
The Meteorological Department predicts cloudy and rainy weather for the next two to three days due to another active Western disturbance. Hailstorms and rain are expected in multiple districts on December 27. The Malwa-Nimar region, including Khandwa, Khargone, Barwani, Alirajpur, and Ratlam, will be affected. Rain is also forecasted for Bhopal, Vidisha, Rajgarh, Indore, Ujjain, and other districts in central and eastern Madhya Pradesh.
