KRBL Limited, the company behind India Gate Basmati Rice, has recalled a product due to excessive pesticide levels. The recall affects the "India Gate Pure Basmati Rice Feast Rozana Super Value Pack (10% Extra)" in 1 kg packaging. This follows reports of two pesticides, thiamethoxam and isoprothiolane, found in quantities exceeding permissible limits.
In a statement KRBL said, "the affected rice was packed in January 2024, with a December 2025 expiry date. KRBL said batch B-2693 was from a single day's operation. After learning of the contamination, the company quickly initiated the recall to protect consumer health".
India Gate rice recalled over pesticides
KRBL's press release highlighted thiamethoxam and isoprothiolane use in the recalled rice, which exceeded legal pesticide residue limits. "The contamination was identified during routine checks, and the batch was recalled to prevent further distribution," the company said.
KRBL Limited, the largest Basmati rice exporter, reinforced internal checks and processes in response to the issue. The company noted that while it enforces strict safety measures during rice processing, pesticide management occurs at the farming level. To address this, KRBL has been working closely with farmers and regulatory bodies to reduce pesticide usage through training and support programs.
KRBL assured consumers that the issue was confined to a single batch and that the company has taken steps to prevent similar occurrences. The company urged consumers who purchased the affected rice to stop using it and contact KRBL for guidance.
Industry response & consumer advisory
The recall has highlighted pesticide use in agriculture, a recurring issue in India's food industry. Basmati rice, a staple in many Indian households, holds cultural and culinary significance. The contamination of such a widely consumed product has raised concerns about the safety of agricultural practices, especially for export products.
KRBL reaffirmed its commitment to the highest industry standards, ensuring no chemical or pesticide usage during processing, aging, or packaging. The company remains dedicated to collaborating with farmers to improve crop quality and minimize pesticide reliance.
KRBL advised consumers of the recalled product to stop consumption and report the purchase through the company's helpline or website. The company promised swift action to address consumer concerns and resolve the matter.
