Heavy to extremely heavy rainfall alert issued for several states; list released

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in Arunachal Pradesh, Kerala, Mahe, Lakshadweep, Assam, and Meghalaya from May 29 to June 2. Moderate to heavy rainfall is expected in Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Karnataka, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh. A dust storm is anticipated in Rajasthan.

A shear zone over southern peninsular India at middle tropospheric levels will result in widespread light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds (30-40 kmph) along the Kerala coast, with strong westerly winds. This will affect Kerala, Mahe, Lakshadweep, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Over the next seven days, light to moderate rainfall is expected over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, and Karnataka. From June 1 to 4, 2024, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Rayalaseema are likely to experience similar conditions.

IMD predicts heavy rainfall in Kerala, Mahe for the next five days. Heavy rainfall is also expected in Andaman and Nicobar Islands from May 31 to June 2. Tamil Nadu and South Interior Karnataka may see heavy rainfall on June 1 and 2. In addition, strong surface winds (30-40 kmph) are likely over Andaman and Nicobar Islands from May 29 to 31, and over Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, Rayalaseema, and Karnataka from May 31 to June 2.

In the northeastern region, a cyclonic circulation over northeast Assam and its neighboring areas will bring widespread light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds (30-40 kmph) over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim in the next seven days.

Isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and Sikkim for the next five days. Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura may experience heavy rainfall on May 29 and 30. Isolated extremely heavy rainfall is anticipated over Meghalaya today.

The IMD has urged residents in these regions to stay updated with weather advisories and take necessary precautions to mitigate severe weather impacts.
